The Mexican peso buys less goods and services these days when compared to the U.S. dollar.

While that is true, USDA's Gabriel Hernandez and Eduardo Lozano urge everyone to think far beyond the exchange rate. That includes being a consistent supplier who builds relationships.

The duo with 36 collective years of service to U.S. farmers, ranchers and food processors discuss the exchange rate situation and more importantly the value of relationships when buying and selling products.
“Carry the ball beyond the goal line, do not drop it at yard one,” said Lozano in making an analogy to the U.S. National Football League (NFL). “By this, I mean follow your product all the way across the border.” Hernandez and Lozano offered this insight as I visited with them at the CIGAL Dairy Trade Show in Jalisco, Mexico.

This Hoard’s Dairyman Intel article is part of an ongoing series that will highlight a Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer (DATCP) trade mission to Jalisco, Mexico. That trade mission coincided with the CIGAL Dairy Trade Show held June 13 to 17, 2016. In all, 11 companies, two educational institutions, two Wisconsin state agencies, and one publication attended the event, along with Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and DATCP Secretary of Agriculture Ben Brancel.
